When I first started raising chickens in 2017, I was in awe of the different egg colors I saw on social media spaces such as Instagram. I bought a few "Olive Egger" chicks locally and after raising them for months, I was disappointed in the shade they finally laid. That's what send me into the egg color genetics rabbit hole as I set out to create my own. In fact, I never intended to breed and show Marans, I only acquired my Marans males to make my own line of Olive Eggers! Then I fell in love with them too and that is what sent me down that long road to SOP Marans. 

Anyway, back to Olive Eggers. Over the years, I've experimented with different crosses and backcrosses, creating sexlinks, and more. It's been really fun and interesting to learn how the genetics work. I'm currently working on olive stabilization here on the farm, but those are a few years from being released as I continue to set the traits I want (not just egg color!)

My Olive Egger hatching egg and straight run chick offering this season will be a little different than what I am usually working on. Instead of typical F1 and backcross breeding, I've put together a pen with Olive Egger males with homozygous blue egg genetics over BCM, Blue Ameraucana, and Olive Egger females. Hatching eggs are sold as hens choice dozens. All female offspring will lay shades of green/olive eggs with potential for heavy blooms and speckles. 

I will also be adding a Chocolate and Mauve sexed PULLET chick option for 2026. These girls will also lay shades of green/olive eggs with potential for heavy blooms and speckles, but will have Chocolate and Mauve plumage!
